US$6.50 CHINESE CELADON Peony Flower Pattern CUP in Gabriola, British Columbia for sale

Up for sale is this beautiful, CHINESE CELADON Peony Flower Design cup. The cup is 3.75" tall, has a 2" diameter base and a 3" diameter rim. The jade green, earthenware cup has an embossed peony flower decoration on both sides. The bottom is marked with an imperial stamp. This vintage CHINESE CELADON CUP is in terrific condition, without any chips, cracks or scratches and showing only a few underglaze manufacturing inclusions (see images). The wooden stand is not included in the sale. CELADON is a ‘western’ term used to describe jade-green glazed ceramics originally produced at the Longquan kilns in Zhejiang province, China as early as 960 - 1127. Celadon refers both to the type of ceramic, as well as to the colour. The process is most often used on stoneware or porcelain bodies. The colour and texture of the pottery is obtained by under firing the glaze. Depending on the application, the transparent glaze can produce a variety of colours, with the most popular being the shades of green that resemble those of jade. Other processing techniques produce a pronounced crackle effect. Later, other Asian countries began producing celadon ceramics; most notably Korea, where they produce a pale green-blue ‘Goryeo’ celadon.
